what is the lexile level/measure?

A lot of schools use the Lexile Level to measure a student’s reading ability level or to measure the reading difficulty level for a specific book or text.

The Lexile Framework was developed by MetaMetrics©, an educational assessment and research team, funded originally by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. More than 30 years of research, scientific validation and countless success stories have made Lexile measures the most widely used reading metric in the world.

how does the lexile level work?

The Lexile score for a piece of text is determined by two factors, word frequency and sentence length.

The Lexile Framework for Reading, uses a single scale to the range reading difficulty and comprehension for students reading a particular book or text.

The scale ranges from 0L for beginning readers and early-reading text to above 2000L for advanced readers and text.1200L is considered workplace-level text.

The Lexile level will always be shown as a number with an “L” after it — for example 770L = 770 Lexile. The higher the Lexile measure, the higher the student’s reading level. The reader’s Lexile Framework works in intervals of five with 5L being the lowest. The highest possible measure is 2000L. Anything below 5L is assessed as a BR or Beginning Reader.

what is my child’s lexile reading level?

Students receive Lexile reader measures through their school’s preferred assessment or reading program and/or state assessment. More than 65 popular reading assessments and products, including 25 state assessments, report student reading ability as a Lexile measure — and that number is growing every day.

Knowing a child’s Lexile Level makes it easy for educators to personalize learning and help them gage the reading progress they are making and set personal learning goals.
